Old Drawers, New Life

I'm a sucker for old drawers - usually of the industrial / tool shop / hardware store variety. They tend to have old numbers or writing of some sort on them, and the small ones make for great little containers. Well, the SchubLaden company in Berlin has come up with a more ambitious use for old unmated drawers. They're building new furniture pieces made specifically for the drawers, and the results are a great mix of modern and antique. If I had the space, I'd love one of these - especially the first one.

Joe Wilson

Joe Wilson's "work consists of painstakingly detailed, hand-drawn illustrations, usually in fine-line pen or pencil, that are then scanned and edited on the mac. He takes his influence from an array of sources including old engravings, 70s Vinyl covers and surrealist art." The bone-beaked bird is great.

Tree Prints

Bryan Nash Gill takes discarded tree specimens from a mill near his house and uses them to make amazing wood prints from the trees' growth rings. This one came in a limited edition of 12.

Antique Bones

So I scored an amazing collection of human anatomical plates from 1883 a few weeks ago and have been selling them at Uncommon Objects. Because it's sometimes hard to sell things I love so much, I thought I'd snap a few photos (my scanner is being a punk right now) of the images in case I ever wanted to reproduce them. They just don't make them like this anymore:

Revamped

I also revamped my space at the shop a few nights ago. Come check it out if you have a chance:

Rock Bottom Riser

Master songwriter, fellow Austinite, and newly long-haired Bill Callahan will release Sometimes I Wish I Were An Eagle next week. I haven't heard a word yet, but it's a must buy for anyone who loves heavy words and beautiful, sparse music. I had the pleasure of listening to him late last night and into the early morning.

From the Phone

I very rarely plug my iPhone into my computer but did so today and downloaded a bunch of pics I've taken over the last six months or so. A few of the shots I found:

Empty

Gigi Cifali has an interesting story. Trained as a topographer, Cifali spent countless hours staring through a 12-sided viewfinder while documenting the Italian countryside. Bored with simply measuring distance and calculating angles, he bagged the topography job and enrolled at the University of Westminster in 2004 to study photography. The results are staggering. Now specializing in long term, in-depth documentary projects, Cifali has photographed everything from the garbage crisis in his native Naples, the inhabitants of low-income London "tower block" apartments, the flight of young residents in Venice, and my favorite of his subjects, the slow decay of abandoned public swimming pools in the UK. Beautiful photos.

Yonder Is The Clock

The Felice Brothers have a new album out tomorrow called Yonder Is The Clock. I think I'm gonna review it for REFUELED Magazine, but until then check out this video from their last album. I love this band:

My Teacher's Teacher

I started taking a photography class a few weeks ago in Austin and just learned this week that my instructor Randy Ehrlich studied under Arthur Leipzig, famed New York photographer. Born in Brooklyn in 1918, Leipzig's documentation of New York City is "always sensitive to its nightlife, its poverty and poetry, its violence and drama. It is not the ‘moment’ that he seeks, rather the human face, the sense of energy, and of faith." A few of his amazing black and white shots.

Eggleston Quickie

Just because I just came across it reading a NYTimes book review, and it's got LA plates, and a heavy chain, and a GE logo, and maybe a Jax beer can:
