Float On

If you haven't seen the new issue of Dwell, they're featuring possibly the coolest house I've ever seen. The Worple residence on Lake Huron is clad in modern slats of raw cedar, has unreal views of a private cove and the lake, offers easy boat access, is filled with soft Douglas fir on the inside, and features custom fixtures, sinks, backsplashes, fireplaces, staircases, etc. etc.. Unreal house. And it's actually floating on massive pontoons. Check out these photos - and be sure to read Dwell for even better pics:

Portland's Canoe

Almost two years ago I took a massive antique hunting / design store scouting road trip to Seattle and back. For some idiotic reason I chose to do it in the dead of winter. It started snowing in southern New Mexico, and the weather generally headed downhill from there. I'd never been to Portland before, and if it weren't for the 48 straight hours of rain, I'd probably have fallen in love with the place. Weather aside, I did find a great design store called Canoe. One of the best I've been to. Check it out if you're ever up that way. Here are some of their offerings:

Have Mercy

Kansan by birth and New Yorker by residence, Laura Normandin explores 89 symbols / objects in varying contexts and combinations. "The objects I choose are generally humble, domestic, and ordinary," Normandin says in her artist statement. "They reside in a world where consumption by moth, rust and thief is imminent. Despite their vulnerability to decay and distress, I seek to unearth the masked strength I sense in there. The idea that the lowly are strong, not despite their brokenness but because of it, is the the theme to which I constantly return." Well put Ms. Normandin.

Wall House

The Wall House, by FAR frohn & rojas architects, has four “delaminated” structural layers: a cave-like concrete core; an outer ring of shelving; a “soft skin” of polycarbonate panels and a fabric membrane. From the inside out the layers build upon one another, both materially and geometrically, blurring the boundary between the interior and the exterior and creating, through the specificity of the different materials used (many of which are not common in architectural applications), a series of qualitatively distinct environments. You'll have to visit Santiago, Chile to see it.
